Artemus Jenkins is an experimental ethnographer who employs a multimedia approach—utilizing documentary filmmaking, photography, and collage—to preserve and offer insightful commentary on the unique parallels of everyday life in the African Diaspora. As a naturally keen observer and intrepid explorer, his artistic practice delves into themes of identity and cultural reclamation.
In 2012, Artemus embarked on a self-funded artmaking journey, releasing films that shed light on alternative aspects of African Diasporic culture. His goal was to address the lack of insider perspectives in mainstream media, thus amplifying underrepresented voices. Through his photography, Artemus not only captures glimpses of his own daily existence but also offers a window into the shared experiences of individuals he encounters during his global travels.
Having produced compelling work across four continents, spanning over 12 countries and 35 domestic territories, Artemus has amassed a rich tapestry of diverse cultural insights. Since the release of his first feature-length documentary, Color Outside the Lines, he has actively engaged in lecturing and conducting workshops. These educational endeavors have taken place in various community spaces and esteemed academic institutions, including Morehouse College, the University of Illinois, Kent State, Georgia State, and Georgia Tech.
Currently, Artemus is in Lagos, Nigeria for the innaugural LagosAtlanta Artist Exchange Program researching and engaging with the local community to exhibit his first international solo show “GITYOUSUMPROTECTION”. He will be exploring connections between West African and African American concepts and aesthetics of protection and spirituality. Artemus is also leading an innovative book project designed to empower young artists titled “How to Be a Dope Artist”, which is being converted from a social-emotional learning curriculum into a docu-series Through this project, aspiring creatives gain a deeper understanding of how contemporary art and media publishing can serve as potent tools for exploring and understanding the world around them. The convergence of his photojournalism and writings manifested in his second solo exhibition, They Should Have Never Gave You Niggas Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice.
Artemus Jenkins continues to be a trailblazer, exploring the unique intersections of art, culture, and education.
